Food
The manufacture of food and drink products is Ireland's most important indigenous industry with an output approaching 20 billion euro.
Almost 50,000 people are directly employed in the food and drink sector with a further 60,000 employed indirectly in all regions of the country. The industry also uses 90% of the output of Irelands 120,000 farmers.
The relative importance of the food and drink sector to Ireland is greater than almost all other EU countries with the highest GVA per employee in the EU and one of the highest turnovers per capita.
The sector faces a challenging environment with a range of factors - energy costs, currency, commodity costs, consumer demand, labour costs, regulatory burden etc. - having an effect on competitiveness. Changes to the Common Agricultural Policy, WTO agreements and climate change will also continue to cause significant change to the business environment.
